Chapter 3

Building a Safe Space for the Baby

Setting up a nursery that is comfortable, healthy and safe is the subject of this chapter. It begins with choosing a crib that meets current safety standards, such as those of the Consumer Product Safety Commission, and a firm, snug-fitting mattress, with a simple two-finger check for gaps. It explains why pillows, loose blankets, bumper pads and stuffed toys should be kept out of the crib to reduce the risk of suffocation and entrapment. The chapter also covers air quality and materials, including HEPA air purifiers, low or zero VOC paints, fresh air, unscented products, cool-mist humidifiers and organic fabrics.
