What Happens in the Third Trimester?

The 3rd trimester of pregnancy spans from week 28 until the birth of your baby, typically around week 40.

This final stage of pregnancy is marked by significant growth and development of your baby, as well as physical and emotional changes for you.

Baby's Development: Increased Baby Weight

During the 3rd trimester, your baby gains most of their weight. By the end of this trimester, they’ll typically weigh between 6 to 9 pounds (2.7 to 4.1 kilograms).

Your baby’s organs are maturing, preparing them for life outside the womb.

Baby's Development: Stronger Baby Movement

Baby movements are peaking. You’ll likely feel stronger and more frequent movements from them, including kicks, rolls, and hiccups.

These movements are signs of a healthy foetus. If you notice a decrease in movements, contact your healthcare provider as soon as possible.

Baby's Development: Developing Lungs

Your baby’s lungs are developing rapidly, producing surfactant (a liquid created in the lungs) to help them breathe after birth.

By week 34, most babies’ lungs are well-prepared for breathing, although they continue to mature until birth.

Baby's Development: Head-Down Position

As you approach your due date, your baby will likely move into a head-down position, preparing for birth.

This is known as the “vertex position.” Some babies may remain in a breech position, which your healthcare provider will monitor.
