Chapter 3
Self-esteem, self-compassion and support are the focus of this chapter. It looks at research on self-esteem and social withdrawal in women with PCOS, and at how being kinder to yourself has been linked with lower cortisol and better insulin sensitivity. It explains emotional self-efficacy, introduces Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and suggests small, practical acts of self-care. The value of support groups and regular contact with trusted people is discussed, given that isolation may worsen symptoms. It also covers when to seek a new healthcare provider if your concerns keep being dismissed, ending with steps you can put into action.
