What is Low Sperm Count (Oligospermia)?

Low sperm count, or oligospermia, is a male fertility issue characterised by a sperm count that is lower than normal per millilitre of semen.

You may not realise you have oligospermia until you experience difficulty conceiving.

What is considered a low sperm count (oligospermia)?

A normal sperm count ranges from 15 million to over 200 million sperm per millilitre (mL) of semen. Diagnosis of oligospermia (low sperm count) is made for any sperm count below 15 million sperm per ml of semen.

Oligospermia can be further classified as mild (10-15 million sperm/mL), moderate (5-10 million sperm/mL) or severe oligospermia (<5 million sperm/mL).

If no sperm is present, the condition is called azoospermia.

How Common is Oligospermia?

Globally sperm counts have halved over the past 50 years. Annually human sperm count has declined by 2.6% annually.

Among males with infertility, 8% have oligospermia, while 1% have no sperm (azoospermia) at all.
