What is Poor Sperm Motility?

Some sperms have difficulty moving or swimming properly, which reduces their ability to reach and fertilise an egg. This condition is known as poor sperm motility or Asthenospermia. Poor sperm motility is a leading cause of male infertility, affecting 19% of infertile men.

What is Sperm Motility Anyway?

Sperm motility refers to how efficiently sperm moves to reach the egg for fertilisation. It’s measured in two ways:
1. Total Motile Sperm (TMOT), the percentage of all moving sperm,
2. Progressive Motility (PMOT) is the percentage of sperm moving forward in straight lines or wide circles.

What is Considered Poor in Sperm Motility

The WHO defines semen quality as poor when less than 42% of the sperm sample are motile sperm (TMOT) and less than 30% are progressively motile (PMOT).

Sperm motility is vital for fertilisation, as the sperm must travel through the vagina, cervix, uterus, and oviduct to reach the egg.
